TFT Set 17: Space Gods - New Mechanics, Release Date, and Tips

📅 Release Date

  • Live Servers: April 15, 2026 (Patch 17.1).

🚀 Key Features in a Nutshell

  • Theme: An extraordinary blend of sci-fi aesthetics with elements of fantasy and mythology. "Space Gods" marks a return to the beloved Galaxies vibe, enriched by the presence of powerful, celestial beings.

  • No Carousel: This is the biggest change in the game's history. The traditional Carousel, present in TFT since its inception, has been completely removed, forcing a shift in how you build your economy and acquire items.

  • New Core Mechanic – The Realm of the Gods: At the beginning of the game, the system randomly selects two out of nine available Gods (e.g., Yasuo, Soraka, Thresh, Ekko, Aurelion Sol). During stages 2-4, 3-4, and 4-4, instead of running around a Carousel, you are transported to a special zone to select offerings and minor boons from one of them.

  • Loyalty System and God Boon: Every choice you make builds your loyalty towards a specific God. In round 4-7, the God you aligned with the most rewards you with a powerful, game-defining God Boon.

    • Deep Dive: The God Boon is a special armory, mechanically similar to the Treasure Dragon from Dragonlands. It allows you to precisely tailor your equipment to your composition in the late game. Additionally, after claiming your Boon, your chosen deity will periodically drop off additional loot for the remainder of the game.

🌌 A New Dimension of Choice: The Realm of the Gods

Carousel is like, so last set. Instead of running in circles praying to hit a specific component (e.g., a bow), you’ll be selecting an offering from one of two Gods that appear—and then another, less powerful, generic reward from Pengu.

The comeback mechanic, however, is not gone. What Pengu offers you in the Realm of the Gods will be adjusted based on your HP in relation to other players, supporting those who lost the most health in the early game.

🏗️ The End of the Carousel: A Strategic Evolution

Removing the Carousel after 5 years of the game's existence is a massive design earthquake, but from a game design perspective, it is a highly logical step. Why did Riot decide to make such a drastic move? The Carousel always served as a catch-up mechanic, but in practice, it spawned two major problems that began to weigh on the system over time:

  1. The Loss-Streaking Pathology: It forced players to deliberately and calculatingly lose early phases of the game just to secure the perfect component for their dream composition. This unnaturally disrupted the pacing and economy of the match.

  2. The Dexterity Factor in a Strategic Game: The Carousel required good reflexes and low ping. A player with a slightly worse internet connection would often lose a key item, which bred frustration in a 100% tactical game.

🔄 From Reactivity to Intentional Proactivity

Instead of randomness and dexterity-based races against others, you are presented with a strategic dilemma. The game shifts its center of gravity from reactivity (what's left for me on the Carousel?) to intentional proactivity (which path of boons do I choose to optimize my late game?). The economy becomes more predictable, and your final composition is the result of a long-term decision made across three stages, rather than a stroke of luck during a scuffle around a running minion.

🛠️ Pragmatic Tip for the Start

The absence of the Carousel completely flips the existing rules of item management upside down. You can no longer rely on the tactic of "I'll lose 3 rounds and safely grab a B.F. Sword."

How to play? From your very first games, focus on maximum flexibility (flexing).

  • Build your composition strictly around the components that randomly dropped from the initial PvE monsters, rather than what you want to build.

  • Use the new God Boons as a tool to patch holes in your strategy. If you lack gold or XP, invest your choices in a God like Ahri or Soraka. If item drops are unfavorable, look for salvation in Kayle's offerings (components) or reach for Augments that facilitate acquiring gear.

When does TFT Set 17 end? (Set 18 Release Date)

For those planning their ranked climb to the very top—the planned end date for Teamfight Tactics Set 17 and the simultaneous launch of Set 18 is July 29, 2026.

Good luck earning divine loyalty, and see you at the highest tiers of the ranked ladder in the new set!
